I really appreciated this tale. I had occasion to use the ‘Angelou surprise’ on two would be attackers in Brazil - on a beautiful secluded beach where I had just spent the most glorious day with my then girlfriend. To be honest, turning to face men in balaclavas (1 armed with a knife) and letting years of frustration at gender injustice rip… it wasn’t a planned reaction - it was just instinct. Thankfully, it worked… they stopped their pursuit and it gave us enough time to reach people on the next beach over. The scary thing on reflection is that we had absolutely no valuables on us - we were the valuables! It’s a shame that the emphasis on behaviour change often is on us, rather than the perpetrators! Thanks for sharing.
