I really appreciate it when readers see something in my work that I hadn’t spotted - which is the tension between control (we feel we have control over our lives) and letting go at the end. When I was rereading Lady Death, I realised that I had alluded to 8 or 9 different ways of exiting this mortal coil. I think the uncertainty of what’s ahead is a fundamental challenge to our perception of control. On the other hand, I’m glad I don’t know when I’ll meet her or the circumstances of that encounter. It’s perfectly fine to plod along, doing our best, day by day.
